Whether that be through vibrant walls, bold window treatments, or colorful area rugs, we are here to help you create a home that showcases your personality. One of our favorite ways to add personality to a space is by adding an area rug. If you want to transform your space from classic to contemporary, or traditional to modern, a rug is a great way to do that. We realize that there are countless options out there and below, we’ve listed out some guidelines that will help you with choosing the perfect rug for homes.

Many designers stand by the idea that when you’re designing a space, start with the rug. From the rug, you can then choose colors to paint your walls, accenting throw pillows, and statement painting pieces. Think about what colors you like and what colors you already have. The color of your area rug can set the tone of your room. If you already have furniture and are trying to decide what rug to get, you can choose a rug that will stand out or blend in. If your furniture is bold or filled with patterns, you might want a rug that is more neutral. However, if your furniture is all low tones, you might consider a statement area rug.

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when designing a room is choosing an area rug that is too small for the room. For most rooms, the rule of thumb is there should be between 10-20 inches of bare floor between the edge of the rug and the walls of the room. And almost always, you want your rug to be centered in the room and under your light fixture.

Those are overall rules but we want to help you with more specific examples that pertain to you. If you want a rug for transitional spaces like hallways or doorways, the width of your rug should match the door frame or be a few inches less. Find longer rugs that stretch your hallway to create balance. And if you have any furniture in your hallway, keep it off the rug.

In your home office, you want to have a rug that fits your desk and chair. This creates a warm cocoon effect and prevents tripping or chair dragging. For your dining room, stick to rug shapes that fit your furniture. Pair square rugs under square tables and round rugs under round tables. And lastly, if you have a small room, consider bold patterns to make your room feel larger.

Area rugs are a perfect way to add spice to your home. At our showroom in Greensburg, we have a wide selection of ever-changing rugs and throw pillows for you to browse. Our team will be happy to help you in deciding which rug would best complement your space. Stop in today to see our selections!
